SK Update: Plexibond Painting

One of the problems of my house in Baguio is that there are water leaks in the walls huhuhu. And the areas that are most affected are the walls of my room and one side of the living room because most of the time, the wind’s direction is hitting those areas directly.

And so last summer, my brother painted the exterior walls with plexibond. I am not sure if this was not available 7 years ago when I was building the house. Or maybe there was another way of water proofing done but it just did not turn out well. We are observing the improvement now So far, so good as per my brother. There were no leaks on the walls during the strong rains in June and July. So whew! I hope that permanently resolved the issue.

Cost: So far, I spent around Php 8,000.00 for the materials – 6 or 7 cans of plexibond paint and 2 or 3 bags of cement. We are not done yet with the upper part. I need to buy more.

The upper part has no plexibond yet. Unfortunately, we used 2 different brands, hence the difference in shades. I was being OC and was asking my brother if he can repaint the lower part to make all colors the same. I’m not sure if it still can be done.

What’s Cooking: Eggplant Parmesan

Notes:

  • Recipe from here.
  • I made the mistake of mixing the salt together with all the other ingredients and so when I coated the eggplant slices, it was covered with a lot of salt. The next time I’ll do this, I’ll just sprinkle salt and pepper separately before coating it with bread crumbs so that I can control the amount of salt.
  • I just used tomato sauce instead of the marinara sauce in the recipe.
  • I cannot find parsley flakes so I just used dried basil.
  • I used Parmesan, mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
  • I thought it won’t be that filling for one meal but I took 1 serving for lunch and it lasted me until dinner time without snacks in between so this is good.
  • I want to do this again but as much as I love cheese, I’m avoiding it at the moment hehe.

2017 Week 35: Resting When I Can | Unstable Food Budget

August 21-27, 2017

Last Monday, August 21 was a holiday. I spent some hours cooking the vegetables I bought in Baguio. The rest of the day was spent just relaxing aka surfing the net.

Last Wednesday, I went to the grocery to pick up some items aka more kitchen appliances and kitchenware (steamer and Pyrex baking dish and mixing bowl because these were on sale) and roasted chicken for my packed lunch and dinner this week.

This is another long weekend but I just spent it in the apartment. I did some domestic chores on Saturday. The rest of the day was spent watching movies in Netflix. I’m taking advantage of the one month free access teehee.

After mass on Sunday, I dropped by the grocery store to buy some groceries again for next week’s packed lunch and dinner. I was able to steam the fish and vegetables. I have marinated the chicken and I’ll bake it tomorrow. In between cooking, I was also manning the washing machine. Talk about multi-tasking haha! It worked because I was done with both chores after 4 hours whew. The rest of the day was spent watching 2 movies again haha.

I was consistent in bringing packed lunch and dinner in the past two weeks, and I plan to do so as long as I can. However, I am always shocked every time I pay my groceries. It’s so expensive to buy everything in the supermarket. I wish there’s a nearer wet market in my place but there’s none. Therefore, I need to review and adjust my budget. I know I need to reallocate more for groceries now. I don’t know how much yet. Oh, I have an idea. I think it will help me if I record all I groceries for my meals every week. This will give me an average of how much I spend each week. Ok, yes, I’ll do that. This is also a practice for me in preparing a family budget in the future haha.

↑ Another Pyrex set (loaf dish and pie plate) on sale at 30% off. I paid less than Php 1,200.00 for these 2 pieces. I bought this two weeks ago, together with the oven.

↑ This is the gas range that I want. It’s stainless so no rusting as per sales agent. It’s expensive though. And all gas. I’m not sure if I should instead buy the model where it’s a combination of electric and gas. Which should I get? Need to research more.

2017 Week 34: Weekend in Baguio 

August 14-20, 2017

I went home to Baguio last weekend for some family time.

I went out on Saturday with some of my nieces for some errands which I was not able to do in Manila.

We dropped by the grocery to buy some food.

We also dropped by Ace Hardware to check out their paints. I am planning to repaint my room but I can’t decide which color is best for the long term. I’m leaning towards blue/grey/bluish grey. There are many shades. I don’t know which shade I want.

I made the mistake of painting my room with several shades of blue and green. But the multicolored room is turning out to be not the best especially for small rooms. It just feels so “busy”. I want something that has a calming effect, hence the repainting plans. Plus, it looks dirty because of the sealer they’ve used before with cracked walls. I talked to my brother about it and fortunately, he learned something from a carpenter and there’s a remedy to conceal all those unsightly patches. Whew.

It was my grandchildren’s christening last Sunday and I was one of the sponsors. It was good to be home again after more than a month. The uncles and aunties were not complete but at least other cousins still joined us.

I made a quick trip to the hangar market to buy some vegetables – Baguio beans, potatoes, zucchini, broccoli. I wanted to buy more because it’s cheaper there but it was too heavy.

The BF and I had a short “we time” aka dinner before my trip back to Manila. I opted to return earlier even though it was a holiday on Monday to get some rest.

What’s Cooking: Roasted Vegetables

Notes:

  • Recipe from here.
  • You can technically roast any vegetable but you need to group together those that are cooked almost at the same time to avoid over-cooking.
  • I made the mistake of scrimping on olive oil for the first batch, hence resulting to a semi dry roasted vegetables. I put more oil on the second batch and they turned out better. Eh kasi mahal ang olive oil kaya tinitipid-tipid ko pa nung una hahaha!
  • I roasted sweet potatoes, carrots and squash together. I roasted the bell pepper separately. I overcooked it. Must shorten roasting time.
  • I did not have fresh herbs as required by the recipe so I replaced them with dried ones. It’s still flavorful. I’ll try the fresh ones next time if available.

Despite the hiccups in cooking, I enjoyed eating these. It’s filling. I usually just have this for lunch and most of the time, I only get hungry after 4-5 hours.
